"Despite efforts to find good homes for abandoned and unwanted pets, the sad truth is thousands of dogs, cats and other animals are put to sleep every year.....At one time, gas chambers were commonly used to euthanize animals, but today the practice is generally recognized as outdated and painful to the animals. Even still, there are nine shelters in Michigan that use gas to put animals down."
